Young ambassadors to support young Scots with eating disorders

A unique support service helping hundreds of young Scots affected by an eating disorder is one of ten projects (21 OCT) yesterday shared over £496,000 from the Young Start fund.

Run by the Big Lottery Fund Scotland, the programme awards money from dormant bank and building society accounts to support a range of projects that help young people aged eight to 24 reach their full potential.

Beat, the Eating Disorders Association will be able to extend their “Beat Young Ambassadors Scotland” project, originally funded by Young Start in 2013.  Now they will be able to train even more young people and move into Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee bringing the total of Young Ambassadors in Scotland to 26.

One of these young people is Young Ambassador, Katie Bedford (25), from Aberdeen. Katie said, “I got involved with Beat as a young ambassador as I wanted to provide support to individuals suffering from an eating disorder, and provide hope and inspiration that you can recover from the illness.  During my recovery I would have loved to have met a recovered sufferer as it is an extremely isolating illness, which impacts on every area of your life and sometimes it can fee like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.  It is a wonderful opportunity being able to share recovery tips and ideas and let people you know you can get through an eating disorder and come out the other side even stronger and wiser.”

As well being put through a comprehensive training programme the Young Ambassadors will play a crucial part in contributing to the ten online support sessions that the group will be able to run over the course of the next year.
