Young people and businesses benefiting from Jobs Growth Wales

Young people and businesses across Wales are continuing to benefit from the Welsh Government’s Jobs Growth Wales programme the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, said recently on visit to a Wrexham company.

Dragon Hydraulics specialise in providing high quality 24hr/7 days a week hydraulic hose replacement service and is based on Wrexham Industrial Estate.
The company currently employs two trainee hydraulic engineers through the Jobs Growth Wales programme.  A former trainee who began on the programme in 2013 continues to be employed by the company.

The Deputy Minister visited the company in the week the Welsh Government announced that Jobs Growth Wales will secure jobs for 2,900 young people this year across the whole of Wales.  The programme has secured EU funds of £25m from the European Social Fund for a further three years.
The flagship programme provides unemployed young people aged 16 – 24 with a job opportunity for six months.  It helps employers to expand their business and often enables the young employee to progress into sustained employment.

Eight out of ten young people working in the private sector progress into employment or further learning after completing Jobs Growth Wales six month opportunities.

Almost 15,000 young people have found employment opportunities with Jobs Growth Wales since the programme started in 2012.

Ken Skates said:

“It’s been great to meet the young trainees here at Dragon Hydraulics and to hear how both they and the business are benefiting from Jobs Growth Wales.  It is making a real difference to those young people taking part.

“The programme has proved itself to be a huge success giving young people across Wales the chance to get on the career ladder.  It’s excellent news that 2,900 are set to benefit across the country this year.

“The programme also highlights the impact European funding is having on Wales.  Backed by £25m of EU funds, it is an excellent example of how these funds are providing vital employment opportunities for our young people.”

Business Wales are currently working with the next raft of employers who have registered an interest in the programme.

Young people keen to register their interest in Jobs Growth Wales should sign up through the Careers Wales website.
