techUK Champions Leading UK Skills Initiatives to European Policy-makers

techUK's Head of Policy Charlotte Holloway addressed a European audience on 'Skilling up for the Future of Europe', an e-Skills conference supported by the Dutch Presidency.

The event gathered influential stakeholders such as policy makers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and experts from across Europea in a format that included practical demonstrations, panel discussions and networking opportunities.

In her session discussing e-Leadership and Europe's business leaders of tomorrow, Charlotte discussed the importance of addressing the issues of gender diversity in technology through the pipeline, starting with getting young women in involved in technology all the way to the retention and progression of women once they have entered the sector. She referenced the computing curriculum in the UK  as an important mechanism in getting the next generation of young people to engage in technology and consider a career within the sector.

Highlighting techUK's pilot 'Back to Work' Programme, Charlotte elaborated that the return of women back to the tech industry after a break from the workplace is important for future leadership in the industry. She commented that potential female returners are an untapped talent pool - and making it easier for them to get back into tech doesn't just help close the tech gender gap, it also makes business sense.
