techUK responds: closer working between the emergency services

Read techUK's response to the Home Office's open consultation on closer working between the emergency services.

Recently techUK has submitted a response to the government's open consultation on enabling closer working between the emergency services.

The consultation was launched following proposals that were annonced by David Cameron in a speech made on the 11th of September that set out his post-election vision for a 'smarter state'. The proposals include the introduction of a new statutory duty on all three emergency services providers to look at opportunities to collaborate better as well as enabling Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC's) to take on control of the fire and rescue.

techUK's position is summarised as follows:

techUK is supportive of the government's drive towards cross-service collaboration, which will prove a necessity. It positions technology as a key enabler in realising this, both via interoperability and innovation. The technology to enable real-time and real-world collaboration, while respecting organizational differences, already exists, in the form of common standards. techUK is appreciative of the government's localism agenda but holds that technical leadership together with clarity on procedure is vital, as interoperability cannot materialise organically.
