techUK to respond to Ofcom Call for Input on Universal Service Obligation

Ofcom announces a Call for Inputs to help inform the design of a broadband USO.

Ofcom has yesterday announced a call for inputs to help inform the design of a broadband USO.

This consultation follow’s the Prime Minister’s announcement in November 2015 of the Government’s intention to implement a new broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO). The Government’s consultation on the USO was launched in March 2016 and is still open until mid-April 2016.

Ofcom has been commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to provide technical analysis and recommendations to support the design of the broadband USO. Ofcom is therefore seeking views on the design of the broadband USO, including:

  • appropriate download speeds, and other technical measures, necessary to deliver a ‘decent’ broadband connection;
  • funding of the broadband USO;
  • when, and on what basis, the USO should be reviewed; and
  • designation of the universal service provider or providers.

The call for inputs is open until 22 June 2016 and Ofcom intends to provide its final advice to Government by the end of 2016.

techUK intends to submit a response to this consultation through the Communications Policy Council. Please get in touch with Skye MacLeod if you would like further information on how to get involved.
