techUK to respond to Ofcom consultation on 'A framework for spectrum sharing'

Ofcom has recently announced a new consultation on 'A framework for spectrum sharing'. The consultation closes on 2 October.

Ofcom is seeking views on a proposed new framework for thinking about spectrum sharing that would offer a model for considering whether frequencies have the potential to be shared.

Sharing will become increasingly important as demand increases. By allowing different users to offer more wireless applications, spectrum sharing can bring benefits to citizens and consumers as well as contributing to optimal use of spectrum.

The proposed framework would:

  • identify barriers to sharing;
  • include regulatory tools and market and technological enablers that have potential to facilitate further sharing;
  • and,set out how sharing would be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account any existing uses and proposed new uses.

This consultation closes on 2 October and would be discussed in the forthcoming CPC meeting on 15th Sep 2015.
