t an IT Service Management (ITSM) conference in 2016, the following equation caught my eye: “DevOps = Agile + Lean + ITSM”. In other words, DevOps is about good development practices continually delivering product features (Agile), effectively and with minimal wasted efforts (Lean), overseen by good governance controls (ITSM). I’ve been in the ITSM world since 2002, and working with Agile teams since 2013.
And so, in order to start my Lean learning journey, I signed up for a Lean Enterprise workshop run by Barry O’Reilly.
After my training session, Barry spoke to me about the Lean Enterprise movement. I was interested to learn from him how Lean Enterprise intersects with other IT Management frameworks, such as ITIL® and DevOps. This discussion is captured in the podcast below.
Barry has also co-written “Lean Enterprise: How High Performance Organizations Innovate at Scale” with Jez Humble and Joanne Molesky. In the book, the authors explore the various techniques and good practices enterprises can adapt and adopt in order to:
- Orient the enterprise’s product portfolio to shifting market conditions
- Explore uncertainties and risks, in order to evaluate market-fit for products under development
- Exploit organizational capabilities to increase flow to products and updates to the market
- Transform their organizational culture and practices to better align various often-competing drivers such as financial management, GRC (governance, risk and compliance), and IT.
