The CBI has responded to the proposals set out by the Ministry of Justice aimed at making prisons places of safety and reform.

Neil Carberry, CBI Director Government & Healthcare said:

“Reforming rehabilitation to reduce reoffending could save the taxpayer billions each year, so the CBI supports the Government’s efforts to help achieve these ambitious aims.

“Building new prisons will be central to improving prisoners’ future employment prospects, through better education and healthcare programmes that tackle often complex issues, such as addiction and mental health issues.

“Setting out a timeline will help to focus minds on delivery, while drawing on innovation and investment from business will ensure the successful future design, build and operations of new prison facilities.”
