Simon Stevens used his keynote address to update Expo audiences on various key delivery programmes, including an expansion of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP), designed to help people at risk of Type 2 Diabetes, to 17 additional areas across the country, and for the first time, a digital DPP, enabling more individuals to get the kind of support and education they need to prevent this avoidable and high cost condition.

In his keynote speech, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt outlined measures to create “smartphone-ready” services in a new NHS technology drive.

The new services include:

• The introduction of a new NHS 111 online triage service for less serious health problems. This will enable patients to enter their symptoms online and get tailored advice or a call-back from a healthcare professional according to their needs.
• The launch of a library of NHS-approved health apps to guide patient choice. NHS England will also advise on other wearable devices to ensure people select reputable and effective products to monitor and improve their health.
• The current NHS Choices website will be relaunched as NHS.UK with a wider range of online patient services, including the ability to register with a GP, book appointments, and order and track prescriptions all in one place. The new website will also enable patients to download their personal health records to their phone securely, giving them instant access to important healthcare information, such as prescriptions and test results.

NHS England highlights:

• 12 NHS hospital trusts to trail blaze NHS digital revolution: NHS England outlined further details of the 12 hospital trusts that will pioneer new ways of using digital technology to drive radical improvements in patient care. Known as global digital exemplars, they are the most digitally advanced hospitals in the NHS and will each receive up to £10 million from NHS England to inspire a digital revolution across the health service.
• 100 of the brightest medics driving innovation in the NHS: Speaking at the Partnerships in Innovation session at Health and Care Innovation Expo 2016, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS England’s Medical Director, and Professor Tony Young, NHS England’s National Clinical Director for Innovation, described the shift to the implementation phase of the unique joint venture with industry to give innovators in the NHS the space and support to develop their ideas to improve patient care.
• Greater Manchester – providing a model for health and social care devolution: NHS England’s Chief Financial Officer Paul Baumann confirmed that we are ‘open for devolution business’ as he joined Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, and Jon Rouse, Chief Officer for Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Devolution to discuss the progress of the DevoManc project at Expo.
