The IPCC has begun an independent investigation into the use of Taser by police during the arrest of a man who had been pulled over while driving in Brixton.

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers deployed Taser against the 23-year-old man on two occasions during the incident, which happened in Atlantic Road, near the junction with Saltoun Road, at 10.30am on 14 February 2014.

The man’s complaint was initially investigated by the MPS but the man subsequently appealed the outcome to the IPCC. After reviewing the appeal, the IPCC has begun an independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

IPCC Commissioner Cindy Butts said:

“After considering the appeal in this case we have decided it is appropriate for the IPCC to carry out an independent investigation into what happened.

“We will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of this incident and whether the use of Taser by officers was appropriate.”
