IPCC refers Adrian McDonald investigation to the CPS

The IPCC has referred three Staffordshire Police officers to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for potential criminal offences following its investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of Adrian McDonald.

Mr McDonald, who was 34, died after he was arrested by police at a flat in Newcastle-under-Lyme early on 22 December 2014.

The IPCC has made a referral to the CPS to consider charges over the actions of three officers at the scene. Notices had previously been served on six Staffordshire Police officers advising them that their conduct was subject to the IPCC’s investigation.

referral to the CPS is made when the IPCC investigation indicates that a criminal offence may have been committed. It does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow. The CPS will decide whether charges should be brought, based on the test set out in the Code for Crown Prosecutors.
