IPPR - Driverless cars - long way to go before anyone takes their hands off the wheel

Michael Jacobs, IPPR Associate Director for Energy, Transport and Climate, responded to the Modern Transport Bill in the Queen's Speech

“The Government is right to get ahead of the agenda on so-called driverless cars. The technologies are developing rapidly and they raise important issues for public policy, ranging from accident liability and insurance to traffic management.

"But at this stage what’s needed is consultation rather than legislation – it is notable that the announcement itself is almost entirely empty of legislative content. There’s a long way to go before anyone is going to be taking their hands off the wheel.”
