An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation is examining West Yorkshire Police’s response to reports of a missing person who was found dead in the River Aire in Leeds last month.

The independent investigation will look at the force’s response to calls about Brian Westerman, a 65-year-old retired civil servant from Leeds.

Mr Westerman’s body was found in the River Aire on 18 August, four days after he was first reported missing by staff at The Mount, a hospital in Leeds that provides in-patient mental health services.

IPCC Commissioner Kathryn Stone will oversee the investigation. She said: "I have offered my deepest sympathies to members of Mr Westerman’s family and explained that we are investigating how West Yorkshire Police officers responded to the calls made
