Love Your Local Market to hit the high street this month
2 May 2014 04:59 PM
The third annual Love Your Local Market event
will run from 14 to 28 May.
From Stockton-on-Tees to Southampton, 700 markets across
the country are gearing up to showcase all that is great about Britain’s
most famous ‘local entrepreneurs’. Love Your Local Market fortnight
trading will run from 14 to 28 May 2014.
The
third year of the annual celebration was formally launched last week(30 April
2014) by High Streets Minister Brandon Lewis at a reception in
Parliament.
Love Your Local Market is the summer fortnight-long
celebration of market culture in the UK delivered by the National Association of British Market
Authorities (NABMA). During the fortnight thousands of pitches in
England will be made easily available to budding entrepreneurs, young people
and would-be retailers to set up a stall and test out their
wares.
In
many areas, people will be able to take advantage of the ‘tables for a
tenner’ deal where they can turn up on the day and pay just £10 for
a stall. Expert advice will also be on hand from ‘market mentors’
with years of experience to offer top tips for success.
So
far over 700 markets across England, including 100 youth markets have signed up
to hold markets, putting this on course to be the biggest market event ever
with over 3,500 events across the country planned. Details of where events are
being held can be easily found on the map.
Some of Britain’s biggest business success stories
started out at market stalls including household names like Marks and Spencer
and Monsoon who ran a stall last year on Portobello Road Market where they
first started out.
Speaking at the launch event High Streets Minister
Brandon Lewis said:
I’m proud the government is once again backing the
Love Your Local Market campaign, which has given hundreds of people a stepping
stone to starting their business.
Not
so long ago market day was the most important day of the week, central to the
local economy, the local community and of course local politics. Markets can
once more be at the heart of communities by making them places that people to
love to go – to meet, eat and shop.
There’s a growing buzz around dozens of markets
around the country which in turn, has helped strengthen the high streets which
make up the life blood of our communities.
