Director of New Local Government Network Simon Parker, commented on Scottish Labour’s proposals to abolish Council Tax in favour of a new local property tax and devolve powers over tax to local government in some circumstances

“Local taxation is broken across the United Kingdom. The system is regressive, fails to reflect changes in property values and does not provide enough money to support good local services.

It is good that Scottish Labour has recognised this and we hope these proposals can start a debate on the freedoms that are needed by local government to truly service their places in the ways that best suit them.”
