One-of-a-kind award for artists launches in Gateshead

Arts Council supported BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead has announced a major new international artists’ award – with a difference.

The BALTIC Artists’ Award is the first UK art prize to be judged solely by other artists. And quite significantly, there will be no winner or glitzy awards ceremony. Instead, four emerging artists will be awarded a 13-week exhibition at BALTIC, £25,000 to create new work and a £5,000 artist fee.

Four globally renowned artist judges will each nominate an emerging artist whose work they strongly believe in, and will then mentor them as they create new work for an exhibition opening in June 2017.

The 2017 judges are recognised as some of the most acclaimed contemporary artists from the past 20 years: Monica Bonvicini, Mike Nelson, Pedro Cabrita Reis, and Lorna Simpson.

The biennial award will provide a vital opportunity for those selected to have a mentorship with a high-profile artist and BALTIC’s curators, and to be seen by tens of thousands of visitors.
