Finance and Government Business Minister has visited Brussels to meet representatives promoting Wales in Europe and celebrate the strong links that exist between Wales and the European Union.

Whilst hosting a St David’s Day reception, the Minister reaffirmed the Welsh Government’s commitment to the EU and outlined how Wales has benefited from trade across the Single Market, from EU funds supporting successful investments for growth and jobs, and from opportunities to study and work in other EU countries.

A recent ICM survey for BBC Wales has revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of Welsh voters said they would prefer the UK to stay in the European Union.

The St David’s Day reception, which was attended by senior representatives of the European Commission, MEPs and Ambassadors, also showcased the best of the Welsh food and drinks industry.

In Brussels, the Minister held meetings with representatives from the European Commission to discuss the European Social Fund and President Juncker’s €300bn plus investment package (EFSI) which Wales is seeking to benefit from.  During her visit, the Minister also met representatives responsible for promoting Wales in the EU who are based at the Wales House and representatives over in Brussels from Welsh Local Government and Higher Education.

The Minister said:

"Wales is proud to be part of the EU and we are fully committed to continuing to be a constructive partner for our friends across the European Union and within the United Kingdom.  Continued membership of the EU is vitally important for the prosperity of Wales and the wider UK.  Wales has benefited significantly from EU funds which has enabled us to meet the challenges that accompany economic change and growth.”
