TUC: Government must act on cross-party proposals to give more workers decent pensions

Commenting on a report on automatic enrolment pensions published yesterday (Sunday) by the Work and Pensions Committee, which includes proposals to extend access and to increase mandatory contributions, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“This report is a timely reminder that more action is needed to boost contributions and bring the forgotten millions into the pensions system – mainly low-paid workers, women and the self-employed.

“Next year’s review of automatic enrolment is the ideal opportunity for a long-term plan to make it the cornerstone of retirement saving for working people.

“The committee is right to warn that the Chancellor’s proposed Lifetime ISAs could undermine automatic enrolment. Workers need decent, secure workplace pensions, not budget day gimmicks.”
