Commenting on
the Working Group for Scottish Sport report, Cabinet Secretary for
Sport Shona Robison said:
“I welcome
this independent report that shows Scotland will continue to be a sporting
success on the world stage. I have met the Working Group to discuss their
findings and would like to thank Henry McLeish and all of his team for their
thoughtful insights into how Scotland can move forward as a sporting
nation.
“Building on
our vision set out in Scotland’s Future, the Working Group
found Scotland could compete as an independent country at the Rio Olympics in
2016 and there are no major barriers to securing Olympic and Paralympic
accreditation for an independent Scotland. The group has also suggested ways to
build on the support already in place for international athletes - independence
will create better opportunities for more athletes, giving more Scottish
sportsmen and sportswomen the chance to compete at the highest level of
international competition.
“Sport and
physical activity is a catalyst to a healthier Scotland and the Group suggests
ways to get as many people as possible, especially our young people, more
active by better utilising our world class facilities. I look forward to
discussing the whole report with colleagues across Government and we will
respond to the recommendations in this report in full in due
course.”
