Paul Murphy praises work of Kidney Wales Foundation

Secretary of State for Wales Paul Murphy yesterday praised the work of the Kidney Wales Foundation during a reception held in Westminster to highlight the work they do to help kidney patients and their families. Mr Murphy said: “I’d like to congratulate the Kidney Wales Foundation on the excellent, life changing work they are doing in Wales.  Through their fundraising efforts they are able to support kidney disease research and provide patient services.

“Just 27% of the Welsh population are registered as prospective donors and at any one time some 500 people are awaiting organs.  Most telling is the fact that sadly one person dies every 11 days awaiting a transplant.  This makes the Donate Wales organ donation campaign even more important.

“The Welsh Assembly Government has jointly funded the Donate Wales campaign and is committed to improving services as well as encouraging more people to join the Organ Donation Register.

“The Kidney Wales Foundation has given a huge amount of support and hard work to the Donate Wales campaign.  Both the Tell a Loved One campaign and the Save Sian campaign have had a significant impact on the Organ Donor Register.”

Mr Murphy added: “The Kidney Wales Foundation makes a real difference in Wales to improving organ donation rates and in raising public awareness about this important matter.  I’m sure with their continued commitment this important issue will continue to have a high profile in Wales.”
