Public sector can learn from the private sector when it comes to sustainability – Minister

The public sector can learn from the private sector when it comes to sustainability, Communities & Tackling Poverty Minister Jeff Cuthbert said today before talks with the CBI Wales, who represent some of the biggest companies in Wales.

The Minister is leading the Welsh Government's plans to introduce the Future Generations Bill that will aim to ensure that public services work to hand over to the next generation a country that is measurably better in terms of environment, economy, quality of life and life chances.

A series of 'National Conversation' events are taking place across the country to gather public opinion about the type of Wales they would like to see by 2050. The conversations, which explore the kind of long-term goals Wales should be pursuing, will inform the Bill which is due to be introduced to the Assembly later this year.

The Welsh Government is keen to continue to engage the private sector about the aims of the Bill, and the meeting with the CBI is the latest in a series of talks with representatives of the private sector.

The CBI sits on the Future Generations Bill Reference and Advisory group.

Jeff Cuthbert said:

"There are many examples in the private sector of businesses taking the lead when it comes to sustainable development and that is why I am keen to speak to groups such as the CBI to see how we can work together.

"The aim of the Future Generations Bill is to ensure that our public services are working hard to hand over to the next generation a country that is measurably better in terms of our environment, our economy and our quality of life and life chances. I want to make sure that we learn from the best practice in the private sector.

"If we are to address the intergenerational challenges we face, the private, public and third sectors have to work together so we all make better-informed decisions about for the long term.

"The CBI is already making its voice heard on this issue and I look forward to their continued contributions."
