PM hosts reception for Pride of Britain award winners

David Cameron welcomed winners of the Pride of Britain Awards 2013 to 10 Downing Street to recognise and celebrate their achievements.

Winners include a 10 year old boy who saved his father’s life when he collapsed with a heart attack and a lollipop lady who was almost killed when she jumped in front of an out-of-control car to save a group of schoolchildren.

In a salute to the sacrifice of Britain’s armed forces in Afghanistan, also honoured is an incredibly brave rifleman who ran across open ground under sniper fire to rescue an injured comrade, despite being shot in the head himself.

Also receiving recognition are the families who lost relatives in the Hillsborough tragedy.

Nominated by the public, the winners are from all walks of life, of all ages, and from all over the country. They are selected by a judging committee which this year includes:

  • Mark Austin - ITN news anchorman
  • Katie Piper - campaigner and Pride of Britain winner 2012
  • Denise Lewis OBE - Olympic heptathlon gold medallist
  • Michael Owen - former England footballer
  • Andrea Spyropoulos - President of the Royal College of Nursing

The full list of Pride of Britain winners will be announced in tonight’s broadcast of the awards ceremony on ITV at 8:00 pm and detailed on the Pride of Britain website.
