The Government has recognised the difficulties of providing affordable areas in some areas where development is constrained. They are consulting on changes that would limit the amount of a shared ownership house that could be owned by a resident.

Our full response to the consultation

We're calling for the ability to limit the amount an individual can own to 80% in all settlements of less than 3,000 population, and in all settlements within the boundaries of areas subject to national and international environmental designations.

We've also proposed that this facility is extended to Community Land Trusts. This will ensure:

• a stock of affordable housing is retained in rural areas in the long term
• the use of new planning powers for delivering rural affordable housing is supported
  
• landowners are encouraged to release sites and accept a price that makes it viable to provide affordable housing
