Institute Director welcomes changes to Public Bodies Bill

The government has been defeated in the House of Lords on an amendment that will restrict the powers of Ministers to make changes to 'quangos' set up under a judicial arrangement.

The government also agreed to give consideration to a sunset clause for the Public Bodies Bill after five years.

Speaking about the amendment, Andrew Adonis, Director of the Institute for Government said:

"We welcome the changes to the Public Bodies Bill which help ensure the necessary checks and balances are in place and that ministerial powers are not abused."

Andrew Adonis has expressed concerns about the sweeping powers in the Public Bodies Bill. He said recently:

"The sword of Damocles...hangs over bodies which have been established to act free from ministerial pressure and interference."
