£750,000 for Welsh Language Technology and Digital Media

A new £750,000 fund designed to enable and encourage Welsh speakers to use Welsh language digital media and technology and has been launched by Leighton Andrews at the Urdd Eisteddfod yesterday.

The fund has an annual budget of £250,000 over three years which will be dedicated to a grants scheme and a procurement programme.

Initiatives eligible for the grant include projects to develop Welsh-language apps, initiatives to increase the amount of digital content available online, and projects to provide a Welsh language software infrastructure, such as text-to-speech and voice recognition software.

Leighton Andrews, the Minister with responsibility for the Welsh language said:

"To ensure that the Welsh language thrives in the twenty-first century and that Welsh speakers are fully able to participate as digital citizens, we must make Welsh language technology and digital media readily available.

"We cannot allow the Welsh language to be left behind by the latest technologies, and should instead use these digital resources as a way of demonstrating that the language is a relevant, modern, and creative medium.

"I am encouraged to see that there is an active community of Welsh speakers who are working hard to develop more Welsh language digital content such as apps, games and digital versions of papurau bro."

The fund has been launched in conjunction with the Welsh Language Technology and Digital Media Action Plan, which sets out the areas the Welsh Government will focus on in order to improve Welsh language digital provision.

These include motivating large technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and Apple to offer Welsh language services, raising awareness of current Welsh language digital services, supporting the creation of more Welsh language digital content, and supporting good practice in the public, private and third sectors.

You can apply for a grant from the Welsh Language Technology and Digital Media Fund on the Welsh Government website.
