New curriculum goes up the school

Examples of how schools are planning for the changes Curriculum for Excellence will make to how and what pupils learn in S4 - S6 have been published today.

Education Secretary Michael Russell said the case studies could help schools learn from each other and help parents understand the range of options and opportunities that their children will benefit from.

During a visit to Bathgate Academy Mr Russell said:

"Curriculum for Excellence is designed to make sure young people get the best possible education to equip them for the jobs of the future. By joining up learning, wherever it is taking place, and making links between subjects, we can help make sure pupils are ready for life.

"The new curriculum is now increasing the opportunity for schools to plan an S4-S6 which gives young people flexibility in their choices and delivers personalised learning that builds on the broad, general education up to S3.

"The examples published today show how schools are working with their partners in colleges and beyond to offer young people a much greater opportunity to choose from an increasing range of options. I hope these case studies can help schools learn from each other and provide parents with valuable information about how Curriculum for Excellence can deliver further benefits for their child.

"Curriculum for Excellence gives schools and their partners the ability to offer their learners an education that gives them the skills and knowledge they need for a successful future. Of course, it is for individual schools to develop appropriate opportunities for their young people and the local economy and I'd encourage parents to speak to their pupil's school if they would like further information."
