IPCC investigating Greater Manchester Police’s handling of rape investigation

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) handling of a rape allegation made in 2010.

A complaint made later by a woman was referred by GMP to the IPCC.

The complainant, who reported being raped at knife-point, said that the incident was not investigated properly by the force and that a man identified as being responsible was never arrested or interviewed.

Following an assessment of the information in the referral the IPCC launched an independent investigation.

The investigation will examine what action was taken by GMP in 2010 and IPCC investigators are arranging to interview the complainant.

IPCC Commissioner Mary Cunneen said: "Victims of crime and the wider public must be assured that allegations concerning incidents as serious as rape are investigated properly by police forces.  Our independent investigation will look at whether the investigation by GMP in 2010 was carried out properly, and  if not, the reasons why.”
