Sir Christopher Kelly KCB to become new Chairman of Committee on Standards in Public Life

COMMITTEE ON STANDARDS IN PUBLIC LIFE News Release (PN 207) issued by The Government News Network on 5 December 2007

Sir Christopher Kelly KCB is to become the next Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, the Government announced today. Sir Christopher will take up the appointment on 1 January 2008, taking over from Rita Donaghy CBE, who has been the Interim Chair since April. Sir Christopher said: "I am delighted to be taking up this important position. The need for high standards in public life remains an essential requirement of good government, now as much as when the Committee was first set up. The Committee has significant work to do in the future and I look forward to getting started on this."

Sir Christopher's appointment is for a five-year, non-renewable term.

Biographical notes

Sir Christopher Kelly KCB

Sir Christopher is Chair of the NSPCC and the Chair of the Financial Ombudsman Service. He is also a Board Member of the National Consumer Council although this will come to an end shortly.

He was permanent secretary of The Department of Health from 1997 to 2000.

Before 1997 Sir Christopher held a number of senior roles in the civil service, particularly in HM Treasury. He graduated from Cambridge University with a Masters degree in economics.

Sir Christopher has declared no political activity.

The appointment process for this appointment was fully in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice.

Further Information

The Committee on Standards in Public Life is an Advisory Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored by the Cabinet Office. The Chair and Members are appointed by the Prime Minister. The Committee was established in October 1994 with the following terms of reference:

"To examine current concerns about standards of conduct of all holders of public office, including arrangements relating to financial and commercial activities, and make recommendations as to any changes in present arrangements which might be required to ensure the highest standards of propriety in public life".

Additional terms of reference were announced on 12 November 1997:

"To review issues in relation to the funding of political parties, and to make recommendations as to any changes in present arrangements."
