The Big Debate 2009

LSN’s Big Debate is a unique event in the post-16 education calendar, bringing expert speakers together with practitioners and stakeholders to debate a key issue in a lively and stimulating format.

This year, we invited you to join in the debate surrounding the 14-19 Machinery of Government changes, arguably the biggest change for our sector since incorporation.

We welcomed John Freeman CBE from the REACT programme, Julian Gravatt from the AoC and Paul Head of CoNEL to lead the debate on whether the move to local authority responsibility would increase the cohesion, accountability and partnership working of education, or whether it would hamper provider autonomy and limit local choice. Chaired by Alan Thomson from the TES, engaging and thought-provoking input from the floor followed, with a wide variety of stakeholders, including head teachers, college governors, local authority leaders, private sector partners, youth agency and practitioner representatives, contributing their thoughts, questions and analysis.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), on behalf of England’s Regional Development Agencies, once again provided generous support which was crucial to staging this event and providing excellent hospitality in the august surroundings of the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

We hope you enjoy listening to the debate and learning from some of the points raised.
