Latest campaign aims to keep motorcyclists safe

A cinema, radio and video-on-demand campaign will run over the next six weeks reminding riders - 'Think! Don't ride too fast'.  It highlights the need to pay attention to their speed and surroundings. Posters reminding other road users to look out for motorcyclists will also be placedin petrol station forecourts.

The new 2012 road safety figures for London show the total number of all road casualties fell by around two per cent compared to 2011. However, there's still a lot
to be done.

Other road safety measures

Last month TfL published 'Safe Streets for London', a road safety plan designed to reduce fatalities and serious injuries, particularly among pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. The ideas include the possible implementation of 20mph speed limits on residential roads and some other parts of the capital's road network. Other actions being taken include:

A commitment to produce a Motorcycle Safety Action Plan which will outline a range of actions to reduce the number of collisions involving motorcyclists across London

The publication of the Vision for Cycling in London, an initiative by the Mayor and TfL which promises substantially increased spending to improve roads and safety for cyclists

  • The Mayor writing to the Secretary of State with 20 detailed requests for the Government and EU. They include asking for powers to take over the enforcement of mandatory bike lanes and bicycle advanced stop boxes at traffic lights; the ability to install cycle-specific traffic lights; the capacity to make improvements to pedestrian and cyclist crossings; changes to the HGV and standard driving tests; and the power to require key safety modifications on heavy lorries, which account for a disproportionate share of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities
  • The creation of a Vehicle Innovation Task Force, bringing together manufacturers and safety technology developers to push for better safety
  • Safety action plans aimed at pedestrians and powered two-wheelers, produced by TfL, the police, boroughs and stakeholders
  • An independent review, commissioned by TfL, into construction logistics and cyclist safety following a disproportionate number of construction vehicles being involved in fatal collisions
    with cyclists
