Review of vocational education

A report suggesting ways to improve education and training for the workplace has been published yesterday.

The review, carried out by Willy Roe, argues that the post-16 education and vocational training arrangements should be strengthened and better integrated with other parts of the education and employment systems.

The report provides a number of specific recommendations aimed at improving education and training for the work-place, providing better value for money and improving support for unemployed young people.

Skills Minister Alasdair Allan said:

"It is vitally important that we do everything we can to support our young people to develop the skills and knowledge they need for the workplace. Willy Roe's report contains a number of suggestions to put the learner at the centre of the journey and improve the education and training that we offer young people once they have left school.

"The report also includes suggestions to support those in employment seeking to up skill. The Scottish Government recognises the need to encourage employers to improve efficiency and productivity through skills investment and workforce development. We are also working to prepare for the many opportunities presented by the move to a low carbon economy.

"Clearly, a co-ordinated view needs to be taken across Government, so we shall consider this report in light of the Christie Commission's recommendations for improving service delivery and redesign to secure the very best value for the public purse and our wider work to reform post-16 education.

"This will help to make sure all young people get the opportunity to take part in the education and training they need to reach their full potential."

Background

Willy Roe CBE was invited to examine how Scotland's post-16 vocational education and training can support people into work and help sustain them in productive employment. The review considered ways to achieve better value for money and faster progress on the national economic targets, more effective approaches to workforce development, and support for the unemployed and young people seeking work for the first time.
