NEW FUNDING POT FOR CHARITIES WORKING FOR OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT

A new £15 million pot of lottery funding has been opened up by the Big Lottery Fund for UK-based organisations that will work in partnership to help the most marginalised communities across the world.

BIG will award grants of between £1million and £5million for development work that has a particular focus of improving mother and child health, measures to prevent HIV/AIDS and mitigate its impact and education with an explicit focus on girls.

Organisations applying to the reopened Big Lottery Fund’s International Strategic programme will aim to tackle the causes of poverty and deprivation and bring real changes to the lives of the most disadvantaged people in the developing world.

They will specifically target geographical areas that are unlikely to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals: Sub-Saharan Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and certain Indian states.

Big Lottery Fund Chair, Sir Clive Booth, said: “I am pleased to say that BIG continues its commitment to supporting the most marginalized communities across the world, as we today open for applications to Round Two of the International Strategic programme.

“Strategic Grants will fund projects that address issues that are fundamental to improving the lives of the most disadvantaged people in developing countries.“

To help potential applicants develop their portfolios, BIG will be holding briefing workshops in London on 8 and 18 October 2007. Full details can be found at www.biglotteryfund.org.uk  or you can email enquiries.international@biglotteryfund.org.uk.

The funding is part of an overall £72 million for UK-based charities working overseas to tackle the causes of deprivation and bring about a long-term difference for the poorest people across the globe.

Notes to Editors

• The Big Lottery Fund rolls out close to £2 million in Lottery good cause money every 24 hours, which together with other Lottery distributors means that across the UK most people are within a few miles of a Lottery-funded project.

• The Big Lottery Fund, the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors, has been rolling out grants to health, education, environment and charitable causes across the UK since its inception in June 2004. It was established by Parliament on 1 December 2006.

• Since the National Lottery began in 1994, 28p from every pound spent by the public has gone to Good Causes. As a result, over £20 billion has now been raised and more than 250,000 grants given out across the arts, sport, heritage, charities, health, education and the environment
