Unite accuses Royal Mail of moving the deck chairs

Unite, the union which represents some 9,000 members in Royal Mail, has accused the company of failing to grasp the real issues in announcing a reorganisation of its senior operational management structure.

Unite national officer, Ian Tonks said: "This announcement is nothing more than an attempt by the company to mask its failures in implementing modern working practices.

"It looks very much as if senior executives are more concerned in looking after their own interests, rather than tackling the problems that Unite members face every day - long hours, stress, command and control management, and excessive workloads.

"While it is not obvious, this looks like preparation for privatisation and for current senior executives to fill their boots with pay, benefits and, probably, a huge share option."

Unite is concerned at the cost of implementing this announcement and will be having early meetings with the company to oppose any redundancies that are designed to pay for this.

For further information, please contact Unite’s Assistant National Secretary Brian Scott on 07970 471 910  and/or Unite press office on 020 3371 2065.
