Scottish suicide report

Minister for Public Health Michael Matheson comments on the Scottish Suicide Information Database Report 2012, published today.

Mr Matheson said:

"Any suicide is a tragedy and the Scottish Government is committed to a wide range of initiatives aimed at preventing suicide and on wider work to improve mental health and wellbeing. Improvements are being made in mental health services across Scotland, including work to increase patient safety and improving access to psychological therapies

"The continuing development of this database is an important part of our work to learn more about the factors that can influence suicide. As this evidence is gathered we will use it to develop practical measures which can contribute to preventing suicide and help continue the downward trend in suicide which we have seen in Scotland over the last few years. We will consider the report as part of our development of a new national strategy on preventing suicide and self harm, to be published in Summer 2013."
