First Minister issues statement following publication of E.coli report

First Minister Rhodri Morgan has issued a statement following the publication of the independent E.coli Public Inquiry report.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:

The E.coli 0157 outbreak of 2005 was the second largest in UK history and the worst ever in Wales.  It brought widespread pain and suffering and sadly, for the family of the late Mason Jones, it brought the ultimate tragedy. Our thoughts today are very much with his family and with others who suffered.

I thank Professor Pennington and his team for their report. We will carefully consider the report’s recommendations and respond fully as soon as we have thoroughly analysed his conclusions and recommendations.

We will work with all of the enforcement agencies to ensure the highest level of public protection for the people of Wales and ensure that we do all we can to ensure that all the relevant lessons are learned from the outbreak.

The Welsh Assembly Government will expect that the recommendations are given proper consideration by relevant bodies and individuals, and will facilitate wider consideration at a UK or higher level where required.

Our aspiration is that the chances of a repeat of this kind of outbreak in the future will be minimised, even if the risk of an outbreak can never be wholly eliminated.
