Minister impressed by Barry Regeneration progress
The visit coincided with the start of works on Nell’s Point, the former Butlin’s site and landmark, which is being bought back into use, initially as a car park and events space, as part of a Barry Island public realm programme receiving £632,079 Welsh Government funding.
The Barry Regeneration Area programme, which has been awarded a total of £9.8 million from the Welsh Government, was announced in March 2010 and to date £6.5 million has been invested in the area. This includes improvements to infrastructure linked to the town centre, investment into Barry Waterfront and community facilities and support services to enhance wellbeing in deprived areas of the town.
The Minister said:
“I welcome the work now underway to bring Nell’s point back into use and commend the work already done across Barry. This is further evidence that Welsh Government funding is making a real difference to the people and communities of Wales.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome Peter Cole, Heather Stevens and Mark White as new members of the Barry regeneration area Partnership Board. It’s vital that the Board has a wide range of skills and experience to shape future plans. I’m sure we will see a continuation of the good work which is already evident in the area.”
Councillor Lis Burnett, who chairs the Barry regeneration Area Partnership Board said.
"I am delighted that the Minister has taken time out of his busy schedule to vist Barry and to see at first hand our plans for Barry Island. I have held a number of discussions with traders and residents from the island in recent weeks, and will continue to do so over the coming weeks and months. Alongside the work planned for Nell's Point and the Island over the next 12 months, we will also be compiling a bid for future regeneration money for Barry and I look forward to working with all those with an interest in taking Barry forward."
The Barry regeneration area Partnership Board oversees the programme and ensures the regeneration programme for the town responds to local needs and opportunities.
