Major Festival Celebrating Deaf and Disability Arts Opens at London's Southbank Centre

A spectacular 11-day festival celebrating the talent of Deaf and disabled artists began yesterday, Thursday 30 August until 9 September at London's Southbank Centre for London 2012 Festival.

For the duration of the Paralympic Games, Unlimited Festival will bring together the 29 ambitious commissions supported by Arts Council England for
Unlimited, one of our flagship London 2012 Cultural Olympiad projects.

Almost 200 artists are taking part, including Candoco Dance Company, Dean Rodney Singers, Laurence Clark and Rachel Gadson. Also featured are a number of international collaborations with artists from Brazil, China, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Germany and Croatia.

The programme of free and ticketed performances, exhibitions, participatory activities and discussions will highlight the artistic vision and originality of Deaf and disabled artists, as well as share their practice more widely.

Book tickets online or contact the Southbank Centre's box office on 0844 847 9910 or by emailing customer@southbankcentre.co.uk.

Moira Sinclair, Executive Director, London, Arts Council England, said: 'We are delighted to see so many Unlimited artists coming to Southbank Centre this September. In our Olympic and Paralympic year, we wanted artists to push for personal bests and deliver the spectacular, and nowhere is this more apparent than with these commissions. We want the Cultural Olympiad to change lives, with Deaf and disabled artists recognised for their creative contribution and life affirming work, not just in the UK, but the world over.'

Unlimited is principally funded by the Olympic Lottery Distributor, and is delivered in partnership between London 2012, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council.
