New plan to reduce respiratory illness

A new Welsh Government plan setting out how the NHS will meet the needs of people affected by acute and chronic lung conditions has been launched for consultation.

Respiratory disease causes one in seven of all deaths in Wales, the third biggest cause of death for both women and men in Wales. One in seven adults in Wales are being treated for a respiratory condition.

The consultation draft plan sets out expectations and themes for action by the NHS and how success will be measured in preventing and treating respiratory conditions and tackling their consequences across Wales.

It also makes clear what the Welsh public can expect of NHS respiratory health care by 2016.

The Minister for Health and Social Services Mark Drakeford has published the Together for Health – Respiratory Health Delivery Plan for a 12-week consultation.

He said:

“As with a number of other health conditions, lifestyle factors can increase the risk of getting a respiratory disease. Diet and weight are contributory factors, but smoking continues to be the main risk factor and achieving the targets set out in the Tobacco Control Action Plan for Wales is vital in achieving what we want from this delivery plan.

“We will continue to help make people aware of these risks, but also to encourage individuals to take responsibility for the actions which they can take to shape their own health, and reduce the risks of respiratory disease.

“This plan is one of a number of delivery plans that sets out to improve healthcare outcomes for the people of Wales and I welcome your views as part of this consultation process.”
