Review of languages provision published

A 'Review of Modern Foreign Languages provision in higher education in England' by Professor Michael Worton has been published today.

The review, commissioned by HEFCE in response to concerns about falling student numbers and the reduction in provision, was carried out in a personal capacity by Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost, University College London. Drawing on a range of data, it surveys current trends and makes recommendations to university language departments, university senior managers, HEFCE and Government, to ensure the long-term sustainability and vitality of modern foreign languages provision.

The HEFCE strategically important and vulnerable subjects advisory group will make recommendations on this report for discussion at the HEFCE Board meeting on 27 November 2009. HEFCE's response to the report will be published after the Board meeting.
