STFC in new collaboration with aim of creating one of the world’s most energy efficient supercomputers

The world’s largest, fastest supercomputers are the key drivers of scientific advancement in every aspect of research, from healthcare, to climate change, global security, even finance and entertainment. These supercomputers rely on the development of powerful, cutting edge technologies to make them increasingly more energy efficient, without which they’d be limited by the power they would consume.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Hartree Centre and Maxeler Technologies are now collaborating with the aim of creating a highly energy efficient supercomputer. This work should lead to better ways of speeding up dataflow computing and reducing the energy costs for the scientific and data computing workloads of our industrial and academic partners

The work is being funded by the UK Department of Business Innovation and Skills and the project will offer orders of magnitude improvement in supercomputer performance and efficiency, giving UK industry the edge with a technology designed for the move towards Exascale computing. Exascale supercomputers will perform a million trillion calculations per second, a thousand times more powerful than any in the UK.

STFC Technology Division Head, Dr Peter Oliver said: "The use of this technology builds on the expertise of STFC’s Scientific Computing Department and through this we will develop energy efficient High Performance Computing applications, meeting the needs of our academic and industrial collaborators."

The new MPC-X supercomputer will be available in Summer 2014 and will enable UK industry and academia to develop products and services for a massive scope of applications. This will range from medical imaging and healthcare data analytics, to manufacturing, industrial microscopy, large scale simulations, security, real-time operations risk, and media and entertainment.
