Active People Survey update published

Sport England today published a quarterly update on sports participation in England. Our Active People survey of 190,000 people is the biggest of its kind, and is used to measure progress against our targets to get people playing and enjoying more sport.

The results show sport participation levels in the 12-month rolling period from April 2008 – April 2009. Key results include:
  • 6,822,000 people (16 and over) are now playing sport 3 times a week at moderate intensity
  • Regular sports participation has held firm since the last report in December 2008
  • Some individual sports have seen a decrease in participation
  • Participation by 18 year olds has remained the same
  • Satisfaction with local sports provision has increased

April 2009 was the start of a four year funding cycle for the 46 national governing bodies of sport in which we are investing. A total of £480 million planned investment will go to those sports to deliver against our outcomes of growing and sustaining participation in grassroots sport, and providing development pathways for those with talent.

Headline Active People updates will now be published on a quarterly basis.
