Hospital mortality rates

Statistics on Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios were published today by ISD Scotland.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon said:

"The Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate figures published today suggest that hospital mortality is reducing over time. Our efforts will continue unabated to drive this figure down hospital by hospital. Every hospital and every NHS Board will be expected to scrutinise this data to drive improvement locally, drawing on all the support and expertise available from the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP), ISD and NHS QIS.

"NHS Scotland makes extensive use of a range of published data such as the NHS Quality Improvement Scotland 'surgical profiles' reports; reports produced by the Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality; and a range of clinical audits.

"By definition some hospitals will be above and others will be below the average. The key point is to ensure hospitals look at all their care processes and systems and use the reliable application of evidence based patient safety interventions to improve their ratio. It will also allow us to monitor progress of the patient safety programme's aim of a 15 per cent reduction."
