Colleges shows commitment to health

Ten colleges are proving they’re leading the way to a healthier future.

The learning providers have received Healthy FE and Skills recognition, part of a programme supported by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and Skills Funding Agency, which recognises the promotion of health and wellbeing amongst learners and staff. To gain recognition providers undertake a self-review and develop a two-year action plan they will work towards to improve health and wellbeing.

Nine of the successful colleges have gained the accolade for the second time running. These are:

• New College Stamford
• The Manchester College
• Yeovil College
• Hopwood Hall College
• Itchen College
• Burnley College
• Stoke on Trent College
• Oaklands College
• Peterborough Regional College.

Meanwhile, Linkage College in the East Midlands has received recognition for the first time.

Mike Amesbury, Project Manager (NCS/Health and Wellbeing), The Manchester College said: “The positive contribution that Healthy FE can make to a college’s learners and staff should not be underestimated, nor should the importance of health and wellbeing overall. We are very proud to have achieved Healthy FE and Skills status for a second time.”

LSIS’s Head of Quality and Equalities, Margaret Adjaye said: “We were really pleased that these colleges wanted to become involved. They have shown a real enthusiasm for improving the health of their learners and staff, which can be important to improving outcomes for learners.
“LSIS’s number one priority for the FE and Skills sector is to promote improved teaching and learning; this scheme will enhance LSIS’s commitment to this by helping to improve outcomes for learners. We hope the work that LSIS has conducted will continue to have an impact in the future. “
