A sporting future for London

Sport England today joined the Mayor of London and his Sports Commissioner Kate Hoey to launch ‘A Sporting Future for London’ – a plan to encourage more people to play sport in London in the run up to the 2012 Games.

The plan, which aligns with Sport England’s strategy to create sporting opportunities in every community, is designed to capitalise on the once in a lifetime opportunity for the host city to create a lasting sporting legacy.

Key initiatives in the plan include:
  • Mobile swimming pools
  • Boxing academies
  • Street athletics
  • Competitive sport for children with disabilities.

Jennie Price, Sport England’s Chief Executive, said:

"We need everyone involved in community sport to pull together if London is to break the mould by becoming the first Olympic host city to leave a lasting sporting legacy. ‘A Sporting Future for London’ is a positive step forward and will make a strong contribution to ensuring all Londoners benefit from the Games."
