Funding for Gaelic education

An extra £800,000 for Gaelic education has been announced, bringing Scottish Government investment in the Gaelic Schools Fund to £2.15m this year.

First Minister Alex Salmond made the announcement at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland's Gaelic college in Skye on his way to the Wstern Isles for a historic first Scottish Cabinet meeting in Stornoway.

The FM launched the Gaelic Schools Capital Fund in October last year, ahead of the Royal National Mod.

Mr Salmond said:

"The Gaelic language makes an enormous contribution to Scottish culture. The language is a key part Scotland's unique culture and history and it's incredibly important that we invest in its future.

"The Scottish Government is doing all we can to promote the language and to expand Gaelic education to schools across Scotland.

"This investment of a further £800,000 into the Gaelic Schools Capital Fund will help create new speakers and help to create a sustainable future for the language.

"This is an exciting time for Gaelic, with the success of the Gaelic language channel BBC Alba (launched at the Fàs Centre at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig last September) and Bòrd na Gaidhlig driving forward Gaelic language plans. There should be no limit to the ambitions of young Gaels and there will be no respite in this Government's commitment to ensuring a vibrant, prominent future for Gaelic in Scotland."
