Vote now to choose the best science images in the UK: STFC Photowalk 2012

Forty of the most spectacular photographs of cutting edge science and engineering have yesterday been shortlisted for a major UK photography prize. The public now has a chance to vote online to decide which ten images they think are the most dynamic, inspiring and spectacular.

Regional judging of the 2012 STFC Photo Walk entries is now complete, and the panels, including members of the Royal Photographic Society, have selected their Top 10 images for each STFC site. The public is now invited to visit the Photowalk website (link opens in a new window) to vote for their favourite images and help us identify the final set of images that will go forward to the national judging in December.

Online Voting opened at noon on Monday 29 October and closes at noon on Sunday 18 November.

Each person visiting the website may only vote for up to ten of the 40 shortlisted images. Voting is on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is the least favourite of your chosen ten, and 10 is your favourite out of your chosen ten. The six images with the highest average score at the end of the voting process, along with the four regional winners, will progress to the national judging panel, where an overall winner will be selected.

During September amateur and professional photographers were given unique 'behind the scenes' access to British science laboratories that have been at the forefront of a number of recent scientific discoveries including new insights into the formation of stars in distant galaxies, new drug treatments and new weather forecasting models produced on some of the world's fastest supercomputers.

The best UK Photowalk images will qualify for an international competition against images from laboratories in the United States, Germany, Italy and Canada.
