Unidentified walker found on beach at Ness, Isle of Lewis

MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (383-08) issued by COI News Distribution Service. 1 December 2008

At twenty minutes past three on Sunday afternoon, Stornoway Coastguard received a request for assistance from Stornoway Police after a member of the public reported finding the body of a male.

Police and the Coastguard Rescue team from Ness were sent to the scene, along with the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. After a medical assessment by the helicopter crew, the male was airlifted to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man is unknown and the Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the man locally or know anyone who may be overdue from walking on the Isle of Lewis.

The man is described as a white male, about 6' tall, heavy build, aged late 40's / early 50's, short cropped black/grey hair, clean shaven. He was wearing outdoor clothing including a green waterproof jacket, dark waterproof trousers and a black woollen hat. He was also wearing brown leather walking boots and carrying a large blue & navy rucksack.
