Projects to benefit from Wales for Africa grants

NHS staff from across Wales will be working to improve the health of some of the most disadvantaged people in Africa, thanks to a £100,000 grant from the Welsh Government.

Ten projects with links to hospitals across Wales have been awarded funding in the latest round of the Wales4Africa Health Links Scheme, launched in 2006.

Projects include a link between Sierra Leone and Velindre Cancer Centre to provide treatment for Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a treatable cancer that currently causes many deaths in children in the country.  Ethiopia Link Project, sees staff from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd support healthcare staff training in Hossana Hospital, in central Ethiopia.

Health Minister Lesley Griffiths said:

“The projects all contribute to Millennium Development Goals, to reduce childhood mortality, improve maternal health and to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

“Many thousands of people involved in the projects will benefit hugely from the expertise and commitment of Welsh healthcare professionals.  Well over 500 people have volunteered their time and expertise as part of Wales4Africa.  I believe that our staff also gain a great deal from their involvement, in terms of professional development, leadership and team building.”
