First Minister launches Welsh caucus on Capitol Hill

Wales will have a powerful voice at the heart of the United States Government thanks to a new caucus launched on Capitol Hill by First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones.

The Friends of Wales caucus is made up of Congressmen from across the US who all have close links with Wales through business, education, and family connections.

The caucus will strengthen the bond between Wales and the US by raising Welsh interests and supporting events to promote Wales on Capitol Hill.

The bi-partisan group has been made possible thanks to the work of Congressman Morgan Griffith (Republican – Virginia), who has long been a strong supporter of Wales.

The First Minister, who is currently on a five day visit to the US to showcase Wales, said:

"Wales has strong and historic links with the US, which date back to the very foundation of the Union and which continue to this day. Every Congressman who has joined the Friends of Wales caucus shares a strong affinity with our great nation.

"The new caucus provides Wales with strong support and gives us an excellent platform to promote Wales as a first rate destination for business, culture and tourism.

"I’m particularly grateful to Congressman Griffith for his work in establishing the group and I look forward to welcoming members to Wales in the future."

The caucus will expand Wales’ existing presence in the US even further. The Welsh Government currently has a presence across the United States, in San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C and Chicago, providing valuable gateways to attract trade and investment and strengthening economic and cultural links.

The First Minister is currently in the US to take part in a series of meetings and events to raise the profile of Wales ahead of St David’s Day.
