FDA gives cautious welcome to MPs’ recommendations on senior pay

The FDA gave a cautious welcome to yesterday's report from the Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) that a 'Top Pay Commission' be established to set clear principles and benchmarks for those determining pay for senior public sector officials. The FDA is the union representing senior public sector managers and professionals.

Jonathan Baume, FDA General Secretary, said: "There are some sensible recommendations in the PASC report, which we welcome.

"The FDA has for some time argued the case for the introduction of clear principles when setting senior pay. Too often we see the problem of people being brought into the civil service from the private sector, or wider public sector, at salaries up to twice that paid to those promoted from within the civil service.

"A more coherent structure across the public sector, underpinned by clear principles, can only be helpful in removing this two-tier inequity.

"FDA members do some of the most demanding and key roles in the public sector and need to be properly rewarded. They are already facing a period of considerable pay restraint and as PASC acknowledged, it would be particularly damaging to the UK if talented managers were to leave the public service.

"A pay commission would also help to restore the public's confidence in how public sector leaders are rewarded."
